Paris Saint-Germain Overcomes Marseille on Penalties to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

PSG players celebrating

PSG has now won the prestigious trophy on 14 separate occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a perfect penalty shootout to overcome Marseille in the Gulf and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive French Super Cup title.

The Champions League holders seemed to be coasting towards a straightforward win in the showdown between the Ligue 1 winners and the French Cup holders after the French winger found the net early on.

Yet, the southern French side fired twice in the closing moments to take a surprise advantage. Initially, the English forward converted from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking turn of fortune, Goncalo Ramos snatched a vital equaliser in the final moments to force the match into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the key figure, saving decisive kicks from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all scored with composure for PSG to complete a convincing shootout win.

Now 14-time winners PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now won this trophy for the twelfth time in the past thirteen seasons.
