Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in Perth.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
